Abstract

Hair grows for a lifetime. Wounds heal again. Cells in the blood renew themselves every three months. Stem cells, a very special type of cell in our body, are responsible for these miracles: they can divide, multiply and develop into all the different body cells for a lifetime. If errors occur during these fundamental processes, diseases can develop. Therefore, research on stem cells provides important insights for medicine.

Daniel Besser explains the consequences that misguided stem cells can develop and how research into diseases can lead to future therapies. The "all-rounders" among the cells can do a lot: small pieces of tissue and organoids, so-called "mini-organs", are grown from stem cells and used for substance screening, or one day they will be used to replace lost tissue.

Stem cell research is exciting! But the need for discussion is also great: What are untested stem cell therapies? Do we want humans to one day be able to be created from skin stem cells? And is that even possible?
