Einstein Circle Lecture | Nan van Geloven
How can prediction models support clinical decision-making when treatment effects are already embedded in the data used to develop them? In this lecture, Nan van Geloven, Professor of Biostatistics at the Leiden University Medical Center in the Netherlands, presents current approaches to causal inference and prediction under interventions, including a real-world application from neonatal intensive care medicine.
Info
As part of her visit to the Einstein Circle Workshop on Causal Inference from Observational Health Data, Nan van Geloven will deliver this public lecture at the Berlin Institute of Health at Charité (BIH). While the workshop itself is held in a closed format, this lecture is open to members of the Charité/BIH community.
The lecture will take place at the Spreepalaisand is hosted by Dr. Jessica Rohmann, Head of the Einstein Circle on Causal Inference from Observational Health Data and the Responsible Health Data Analysis Team at the BIH-QUEST Center for Responsible Research.

Einstein Circle Lecture
“(The Lack of) Causal Inference in Prediction Models”
A key aim of prediction models is to provide individualized risk estimates that guide treatment choices. Most prediction models, however, are derived from observational data that include some individuals who have already received the treatment that the model is meant to inform. The causal effects of these earlier treatments blur the interpretation of regular prediction models, making them unfit for decision support.
An alternative approach that recently gained traction is to estimate risks under specific (hypothetical) treatment options, referred to as ‘prediction under interventions’. This approach requires tailored causal inference techniques. In this talk, van Geloven will discuss methods for developing and evaluating models for prediction under interventions, as well as a recent application of these methods at the neonatal intensive care unit.
