The aim of the projects is to develop digital health products for the transfer into medical application in healthcare systems to improve patient care. The projects address a wide range of medical needs, from epilepsy in children and adolescents, atrial fibrillation and lung diseases to challenges during the birth process in Europe and the Global South to personalized therapies in oncology and orthopedics. The project teams for 2025 are:

  • Dr. Simon Bigus und Prof. Dr. Dr. Max Heiland, Charité: Revolutionizing Orthognathic Surgery
  • Dr. Nicholas Brisson, Charité: Visualizing Joint Mechanics and Advancing Musculoskeletal Diagnostics
  • Prof. Dr. Angelika Eggert und PD Dr. Hedwig Deubzer, Charité: Ultrafast Search Engine for Autoimmune and Oncological Diseases
  • Dr. Stefan Florian, Charité: Data-Driven Precision Oncology for Optimized Patient Treatments
  • Iman Ghanad und Prof. Dr. Robert Gaudin, Charité: Digital Platform for Early Detection of Osteoporosis
  • Malika Guggenberger, Charité: Safe Birth for Women Suffering from Postpartum Hemorrhage
  • Viktor Heinz und Dr. Tomas Bothe, Charité: Determination of the Individual Anaerobic Threshold
  • PD Dr. Felix Hohendanner, Charité/DHZC: AI-Derived Prediction of Atrial Fibrillation Recurrence
  • Prof. Dr. Angela Kaindl, Charité: Virtual Epilepsy Clinic
  • Dr. Mirja Mittermaier, Charité: Digital Phenotyping for Identification and Monitoring of Chronic Lung Diseases
  • Dr. Carina Vorisek, BIH: Empowering Birth, Supporting Midwives and Transforming Maternity Care.

The first phase of the program will last six months, focusing on need/concept validation and technical feasibility. The most promising projects will then advance to the following actual product development phase, with support from the BIH DHA program also in the areas of regulatory affairs, clinical validation, business model development, reimbursement, and go-to-market strategy. Towards the end of the first program phase, the teams will present their projects to the innovation community at the annual BIH DHA Demo Day in Berlin in mid-October 2025.

About the BIH Digital Health Accelerator Program

The BIH Digital Health Accelerator at Charité BIH Innovation funds, guides and supports Charité/BIH employees from clinical and research work in developing digital health solutions from their concepts at all stages of project maturity for launch through spin-off or license.

Funded projects develop software as a medical device or health technology solutions based on, e.g., 3D/bioprinting, extended reality, AI, sensors and software. Resulting products include clinical decision support systems, in silico and in vitro diagnostics, digital therapeutics, digital solutions for drug development and patient-focused applications. The support of the structured program includes funding of up to 1 million Euro per project, protected time and support for team development, expert mentoring, access to investors and industry partners, and a dedicated Digital Labs coworking space.

With a successful track record of more than 60 projects funded to date, 18 of which are currently in the program, 13 spin-offs including one not-for-profit and one exit, the BIH DHA program significantly enables and accelerates the development and translation of highly innovative digital health solutions for patients, healthcare systems and our society.
