Engineering Next-Generation Therapies for Rheumatic Diseases.

About the Speaker

Maximilian Konig (Johns Hopkins Medicine | Director, Cellular Therapy Program (Autoimmunity), Department of Medicine)

Maximilian F. König is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Rheumatology and Co-Director of the Center for Autoimmunity and Immuno-Oncology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He also directs the Cellular Therapy Program (Autoimmunity) at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. Born in Berlin, Dr. König received his medical training at Charité. Following postdoctoral research training in Baltimore, he completed residency training in Internal Medicine in the Stanbury Physician-Scientist Pathway at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, and subspecialty training in Clinical and Molecular Rheumatology at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dr. König’s research interests include immuno-engineering and elucidating mechanisms underlying the initiation and progression of autoimmune diseases. His lab works to develop precision immunotherapies for autoimmune and rheumatic diseases that selectively eliminate autoreactive immune cells while preserving protective immune responses. In the context, his group developed several platform technologies for the antigen-specific and precision targeting of autoreactive B cells or T cells, including chimeric autoantigen T cell receptor (CATCR)-T cells, bispecific autoantigen T cell engagers (BaiTE), and T cell therapies targeting TRBV and IGHV chains. Dr. König is a Co-Founder of TBD Pharmaceuticals, advancing some of these technologies towards first-in-human trials.
