Background / Rationale

In the context of the replication crisis in biomedical research, positive transfer of training on Open Science (OS) and Responsible Research & Innovation (RRI) is considered an effective measure to increase the quality of research studies. Hence, the QUEST Center for Responsible Research of the Berlin Institute of Health at the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin implements a comprehensive vocational training programme designed to increase the integrity, transparency and reproducibility of research studies conducted at Charité and BIH. However, vocational training has been challenged by a 'transfer problem' such that large expenditures on job-related training do not lead to the intended outcomes.

Objectives

The project aims to reveal influencing factors either contributing to or counteracting the positive transfer of training on Open Science (OS) and Responsible Research & Innovation (RRI) into research practice.

Methodology

A mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative strategies, is used to evaluate the transfer of knowledge gained and/or skills obtained in QUEST training(s) into daily research practices. Quantitative analysis involves a standardized 3-stage training transfer survey (adapted from Sandmeier et al., 2021, Zeitschrift für Evaluation), while qualitative methods explore the institutional environment and factors that influence the effective transfer of training.

Implications

In the scope of this project, we develop and validate a standardized, impact-oriented evaluation instrument that systematically assesses the process of transferring knowledge acquired in vocational training into everyday practice. While research findings inform QUEST programme development, the instrument we develop can assist other research institutions in evaluating their OS and RRI training activities.
