To continuously evaluate programme activities of BIH QUEST Center, the Monitoring & Evaluation Unit aims to establish the Monitoring & Evaluation Systems COMPASS.
Christiane Wetzel leads the Monitoring & Evaluation Unit at the BIH QUEST Center for Responsible Research. She studied pharmacy, biochemistry, and science management in Berlin and obtained her PhD in neuroscience from Freie Universität Berlin. Her scientific profile combines preclinical biomedical research with technology transfer, science management, and evaluation methodology.
Her scientific career began in experimental biomedical research. At the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine in Berlin and the University of Toronto in Canada, she investigated, among other topics, the mechanisms underlying the perception of touch and pain as well as learning and memory. Her work involved electrophysiological approaches as well as in vitro and in vivo methods.
At the Max Delbrück Center, together with colleagues, she identified a potential therapeutic target for the treatment of neuropathic pain. She further developed the underlying research findings through an industry collaboration she co-led, and protected them with an international patent.
Working at the interface of academic research and early-stage drug development increasingly shifted her focus toward the conditions under which robust and societally relevant scientific knowledge is generated and successfully translated into practice. Her work focuses on the institutional conditions that shape scientific knowledge production within the German and international research systems, in particular, the social nature of innovation and research practices, as well as questions of evidence-based medicine, i.e., scientific quality and methodological rigor in study designs and research projects.
At QUEST Center for Responsible Research, her aim is to advance the Center’s approach to implementation and evaluation from individual, research output-oriented activities to a systematic, impact-oriented framework. In this context, she designed a comprehensive, multi-level monitoring and evaluation system that links institutional interventions in biomedical research organizations with researchers’ needs and with broader institutional and societal objectives.
In her research projects, she examines the conditions, mechanisms, and effects of institutional change processes. To this end, she collaborates with interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research teams and integrates qualitative and quantitative methods into mixed-methods research approaches.
