What is the Patient Advisory Board of the Charité Comprehensive Cancer Center (CCCC)?

The CCCC Patient Advisory Board is a group of individuals who contribute their personal experiences with cancer. The goal is to improve patient care and ensure that research is conducted not only for patients but together with patients.

What exactly do we do in research?

We contribute our perspectives early in the development of clinical studies, review study documents from a patient-centered perspective, and actively strengthen collaboration between researchers, medical professionals, and patient organizations. At the center of our work is the idea that research should be developed in dialogue with patients – cooperatively, respectfully, and as equals.

Our special focus

We advocate for health services research – research that focuses on specific treatment and support in everyday life – to better address patients’ actual needs. In addition, we are actively involved in clinical research projects across different cancer types to ensure that the specific needs and perspectives of patients affected are considered. Because every cancer is different – and so are the experiences of those affected. In this process, we work closely with all professional groups at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin who are involved in patient care: with medical doctors, nurses, psycho-oncologists, social services, and other supportive services.

Why is this important?

Only when those affected have a voice, research can truly be patient-centered. Our perspectives help make studies more relevant to everyday life, more understandable, and ultimately help to improve the quality of care.
